Microsoft upgrades Surface Pro 2 processor for performance boost

Microsoft has swapped over the processor fitted into its Surface Pro 2 for a faster chip just a few months after the latest Windows tablet launched, according to numerous reports.
The Surface Pro 2 went on sale at the end of October last year as part of the second generation of Microsoft's own-brand Surface tablet devices.
As can be seen in the Surface Pro 2 review published by V3 at the time, the new model featured a 1.6GHz Haswell generation Core i5-4200U processor. However, according to various sources, this has been replaced in devices now shipping with a slightly faster Core i5-4300U clocked at 1.9GHz.
At the time of writing, V3 had not received direct confirmation from Microsoft regarding this upgrade or whether it applies to Surface Pro 2 models available in the UK.
The Surface Pro 2, which launched to coincide with the availability of the updated Windows 8.1 version of Microsoft's operating system, offered numerous minor improvements over the first generation model. The most significant was the Haswell generation processor itself, which delivered improvements in both performance and battery life.
With the switch to a different chip, it would appear that Microsoft has taken the opportunity to offer buyers a modest speed bump without an increase in the price; the two chips currently appear to be priced the same by Intel.
The firm will be hoping this appeals to more buyers as to date Microsoft has not had huge success trying to compete with the likes of Apple in the tablet market.
